Apple first embraced OLED display with the iPhone X and then two out of three of its latest flagships, the Apple iPhone XS/XS Max also featured OLED display. Meanwhile, Apple’s cheaper iPhone XR has an LCD screen. However, it seems that 2019 iPhone XR will be the last iOS device embracing LCD panel because Apple’ entire 2020 iPhone lineup will come with OLED screens.
The WSJ reports that Apple could drop LCD displays to switch to OLED ones, which will create a more flexible design for the 2020 iPhone lineup. This means that we are likely to see a new look in 2020 iPhones. In addition, Apple’s impending switch has made the LCD supplier named Japan Display worried. The supplier is reportedly seeking help from investors before Apple ditches LCD panels completely.
The report states, via MacRumors.
Apple actually had a tough time creating the Liquid Retina LCD in its iPhone XR, demanding various experiment with LCD backlight design to extend the display to the edges. The affordable iPhone XR’s bezels are noticeably bigger than the Apple iPhone XS/XS Max though. In addition to an LCD display with noticeable bezels, the 2019 iPhone XR will have dual cameras on the back as well as faster LTE. Also, Apple will use USB Type-C for its iPhones instead of Lightning port this year. Last year, Apple expected the cheaper iPhone XR to be the best selling iPhone, but its quarterly sales were lower than expected, especially in China in which the company’s expected revenues dropped from US$93 billion to US$84 billion.
