It has not been that long for after foldable smartphones start appearing on the market. It has been a rocky ride with the pretty disastrous launch of the Samsung Galaxy as an example.
After that, other big companies have unveiled their own foldable devices. Samsung, as well, has released the successor to its Samsung Galaxy called Galaxy Z Flip which is more robust-looking. Here are 7 notable foldables and concepts that have been released up until now.
1. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip

In the introductory video of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, its design is said to be out of the box. The device was recently unveiled at the company’s special event. And thankfully, it does look studiers than its predecessor, the Galaxy Fold.
Although there is a visible crease in the Galaxy Z Flip, the 6.7-inch display can easily be folded into a pocket-sized device. The Galaxy Z Flip actually takes us back to the 90s when the classic clamshell-type phones were still common.
The most important improvement that the Galaxy Z Flip has over the Galaxy Gold is its price point. It has a price tag of $1,380, still expensive but is more reasonable than the $2,000 price of the Galaxy Fold.
Also, the device is more durable. Samsung decided to cover the screen in glass therefore it is less susceptible to scratches than its predecessor. Compared to other foldable phones, the sturdiness and specs of the Galaxy Z Flip make it a really worthy foldable.
2. Royole FlexPai
Royole with its FlexPai took on other big names on the market like Samsung. The tablet/smartphone hybrid uses the second generation Cicada Wing flexible display of Royole. Thus the phone can bend from 0 to 180 degrees freely. It has a 20MP telephoto lens as well as a 16MP wide-angle lens.
The FlexPai 2 was originally going to be unveiled at this year's Mobile World Congress. However, due to the Coronavirus, the event has been called off. Now, Royole is planning on releasing the FlexPai 2 ahead of time.
3. Samsung Galaxy Fold
The Galaxy Fold, being the first foldable released by Samsung, would always be an iconic device. However, its price of $2,000 making it hard for consumers to afford the smartphone.
After a rocky ride and the smartphone was officially launch, reviews only focused on the poor durability of the Galaxy Fold. And after the Galaxy Z Flip was released, some have said that it should have been the first foldable phone instead of the Galaxy Fold.
On the inside, the Galaxy Fold has a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display and a 4.6-inch display when it is folded. There are 6 cameras in total and 2 batteries totaling 4,380mAh.
When used as a tablet, it has a QXGA+ resolution and when folded into smartphone size, it has an HD+ resolution.
4. Huawei Mate X
At the Mobile World Congress held last year, Huawei unveiled its foldable phone called Huawei Mate X. And it is surely an impressive phone.
On the front of the phone is a 6.6-inch screen while on the back, there is a 6.38-inch screen. The phone is priced at $2,600. Once you unfold the phone, it has an 8-inch display. The smartphone comes with an 8GB RAM as well as storage of 512GB.
Huawei highlight that the phone is ultra-compact and ultra-slim with a 5.4mm thickness and 11mm slimline.
5. Motorola Razr
When the Motorola Razr was unveiled, reviews stated that its specs, particularly its battery life, are not up to standard.
The design of the phone is based on the classic Razr flip phone. The foldable Motorola Razr is equipped with a 6.2-inch pOLED screen and a 2142x876 display.
The phone has a price tag of $1,499. Outside of the phone is a 2.7-inch OLED display covered with glass, allowing users to respond to their messages without having to unfold the phone.
While the phone may not have satisfied smartphone users, it is known to be the first foldable smartphone that has a clamshell design.
6. Oppo Smartwatch concept
While this is still a concept, it might show another aspect of fold tech: the foldable smartwatch.
The design concept which is a patent of Oppo suggests that the company might want to ambitiously take on Apple and Samsung.
The concept has a rollable display that can expand the length of the screen without making it become wider. While we will have to wait quite a long time for this to be commercially released, the concept does suggest that there are some other creative directions for foldables.
7. Samsung Z-shape foldable concept
Similar to the smartwatch of Oppo, the Z-shape is only a patent that can be seen on LetsGoDigital.
The concept shows a smartphone folded into a Z shape. It is a Galaxy Fold that has an extra fold. And based on the durability of the Galaxy Fold, that probably isn’t a good thing.
If the Galaxy Z Slip does well on the market, it is likely that Samsung will learn that sturdiness is what it should focus on.
It has not been an easy road for companies with their foldables. What do you think? Will foldable smartphones become mainstream or are they too pricey and impractical?
