Closing a solid 2018, Microsoft not only surpassed Apple to become the world most valuable company but its Windows 10 is also the most popular OS.

According to Net Marketshare’s report, Windows 10 now tops the market of desktop OS. Windows 10 has entered the market for three years and a half, and this is the first time the OS has taken the top spot.

It was not an easy success for Windows 10, now occupying 39.22 percent of total market share, the OS had to surpass its sibling Windows 7, whose market share is currently 36.9 percent. Windows 8.1 stands at the fifth position, with only 1 percent less popular than Windows XP.

Right now, about 700 million devices of different types are running on Windows 10. Microsoft took the risk when it released an operating system that can switch forms between a computer and a tablet, its effort paid off. Microsoft also decided to bring Windows 10 to Xbox and succeeded too.

It is likely that the figures for this operating system will hardly change since several enterprise clients will keep their current OS. That’s something so clear about the new OS that anyone who’s worked in a big corporation can tell you. And the Windows XP is still among the five most widely used operating systems.

With the success of Windows 10, along with surpassing Apple to once again become the most valuable firm in the world, Microsoft has nicely closed a solid 2018 for itself. Apple’s operating system is standing at the third position on the list, with 10.14 Mojave accounting for 4.73 percent of total market share.

Microsoft released Windows 10 for common use on July 15, 2015, as part of its Windows NT family of OS. One of the key features of this OS is that it supports universal apps, which has been expanded from the Metro-style apps first spotted in Windows 8. Accordingly, developers can design universal apps to run across various product families of Microsoft with almost the same code, including tablets, PCs, Xbox Ones, smartphones, etc. Previously, we had the successful Windows 7 released on October 22, 2009, and Windows 8 released on October 17, 2013.
