Facebook has announced that it will introduce ads to its popular messaging app - WhatsApp. According to Facebook, targeted ads will show up in the tab for Status on WhatsApp messenger.
Many people have voiced their opposition and are annoyed by this announcement. Some WhatsApp users have been rumored to change to other messaging platforms such as Signal, Viber, and Telegram - with no ads and the same security level as WhatsApp.
WhatsApp’s annoying new update will make you quit the platform right now
WaBetaInfo opened a survey on Twitter to investigate how many people using WhatsApp will keep using the messaging service after ads come to the Status tab. Although there are many people, who oppose and protest against the ad, 60% of people voted that they will still use WhatsApp even when it contains ads. They believe that these ads will not invade and affect their messaging.
Before that, WhatsApp had many resignations, and it was very likely involved with these changes of WhatsApp. WhatsApp co-founders Brian Acton and Jan Koum left the firm early this year. Many believe that Facebook's advertising plan for the messaging platform is one of the reasons for those departures.
Recently, WhatsApp's business director Neeraj Arora resigned after seven years at the company. Mark Zuckerberg's decisions for the future of this messaging platform seem to upset WhatsApp senior executives and make them leave.
WhatsApp has been focusing on user privacy and saying no to all types of advertising. But now Facebook is making money in whichever way it can, so the introduction of this advertising feature despite the contrary with the previous motto of WhatsApp but it brings a lot of profit.
For now, WhatsApp doesn't run advertisements in the Status box, but it may happen soon in the future, (maybe in early 2019). WhatsApp spokesperson told Tech Crunch that they would change very steadily and carefully. They will publish details before applying any advertisement to the WhatsApp Status tab.
