Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, WhatsApp has decided to reduce the length of video status from 30 seconds to 15 seconds in India.

The COVID-19 outbreak has led to people having to stay indoors, practicing social distancing. To minimize the network load, streaming platforms have had to temporarily reduce video quality. And WhatsApp, the messaging service from Facebook, is the latest to join the list. WhatsApp Indian users can only upload video status that is 15 seconds long instead of 30 seconds like before.

The info was pointed out on Twitter by WABetaInfo, whenever a user tries to upload a video status on WhatsApp, the length of the video is now limited.

The account suggests that this move is probably an initiative to lessen the pressure put on the server infrastructures.

The messaging service has imposed the new status limit via a server-side change. Therefore, it does not matter even when you don’t update your app. You will see a message that announces the change in the length of the video status when you open the status upload screen.

WABetaInfo, however, also mentions that this should only be a temporary change amid the pandemic when there are too many staying at home. Once the situation is settled, the change will be reserved. With that said, as a workaround, you can try to upload several multiple follow-up statuses, but we don’t recommend you doing it.
