The announcement was made on the official account of Twitter.

Back in 2019 when Twitter decided to lock down the functionality “tweet via SMS or text messages” for a short time, almost all users couldn’t help being astonished. The explanation given to them was that the company wanted to ensure the safety of its users’ accounts.

Now they had to make the decision over this issue once again with a rather strong attitude. According to their latest Tweet, they admitted having witnessed many vulnerabilities as well as security flaws with their SMS; therefore it must be deactivated from now on.

Although some locations could still access the feature and every user will be able to reach their important SMS messages used to manage their activities, there is very little likelihood of the feature being returned in the future.

Frankly speaking, such a decision was made after the account of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had been hacked and invaded. "Bomb" threats and other spam messages were tweeted on his account, which resulted in a lot of confusion and anger.

The accident was caused by the need for the feature ‘tweet via SMS’ for users’ phone numbers, especially when their phones were not saved carefully in publication.

Besides disabling the ‘tweet via SMS’ functionality, Twitter locked millions of inactive accounts created over the platform’s SMS as well. According to the company spokesperson, deactivating those accounts was a must because of the high potential risk they may have.
