For users between 13 and 15 years old, TikTok will make their account private by default, according to a blog post from the company on Wednesday. The change comes with several updates to the privacy policies of the social network, aimed at younger users.
The post said:
“As young people start their digital journey, we believe it's important to provide them with age-appropriate privacy settings and controls.”
Apart from this, only friends can comment on a TikTok video of these underage users as the platform is removing the option for everyone else to comment. Users under 16 years old will not be able to use the stitch or duet features, which let you incorporate other TikTok videos in your own. Meanwhile, users at the age of 16 and 17 can only use the features with their friends.
The update also brings about other changes like a restriction on direct messaging to accounts of users of 16 years and older and only users of 16 years and older can download videos.
Since the short video sharing platform was launched, it has quickly become a worldwide phenomenon and got a huge userbase. A lot of people have got popular and make money on TikTok with their viral videos.
However, along with the advantages come the disadvantages. Like any other social platform, TikTok faced privacy and security problems with younger users who became predators on the platform. A bunch of scandals forced the company to pay more attention to protect younger users, hence the new changes recently.
