The fact that the Internet these days is being taken over of a few influential companies is causing anger to its users, who are not even guaranteed the privacy of their personal cyber data. Even Tim Berners-Lee, who is its father, has to raise his voice about the ongoing problems of the web, then propose a viable solution on a global scale - The Contract for the web.
For the purpose of improving the quality of the Internet, there are nine important terms written in the web contract. Listed as follows, they are providing people from every country with budget-friendly Internet access, ensuring cybersecurity, discouraging governments from making the Internet inaccessible, and raising the awareness of civil rights and human decencies, which are considered to be the most ambitious statement claimed in many a country’s agenda. In addition, to constitute an endorsement for these principles, national authorities, corporations, and citizens receive an offer to be witnesses of the contract.
Thanks to the investigation of not only France and Germany governments, but also companies and organizations such as Google, Microsoft, Wikimedia…, the contract was eventually drafted after no less than a year. Right after that, it has attracted a great number of digital security organizations, notably the Electronic Frontier Foundation and social media companies like Facebook and Twitter. However, going against the vast majority who have contributed to the success of the project, Amazon decided not to partake in this universal endorsement.
Regarding those who have agreed on the principles listed in the contract, they must join hands to create an open and cash-free web. Added by The Guardian, it is also compulsory for them to find solutions for the web’s dilemmas. If not, they will be excluded immediately. The world is still harboring suspicion about this enforcement, because of the data privacy scandal of the two participants - Facebook and Google.
