Huawei confirms its upcoming computer models will come pre-installed with HarmonyOS 5 for PC.
Huawei has officially announced HarmonyOS 5 for PCs, its first self-developed computer operating system. The OS builds on HarmonyOS Next, a mobile platform announced in October 2024. Moreover, it operates completely independently of Android.
Huawei claims HarmonyOS 5 has been rebuilt from its kernel. Additionally, it features comprehensive improvements in three key areas: the HarmonyOS platform, ecosystem, and experience. Furthermore, this operating system can support up to 1,000 peripheral devices.

HarmonyOS 5 for PCs: Key Features and Functionality
HarmonyOS 5 utilizes the Ark graphics tool to ensure smooth performance. Meanwhile, its integrated AI assistant can summarize and translate documents while responding to queries. For functionality, Huawei has developed and optimized over 150 applications specifically for the computer ecosystem. Additionally, they've integrated more than 2,000 universal apps from the mobile ecosystem.
Similar to Windows, users can open multiple windows and adjust sizes and icons as desired. The status bar and taskbar can also be customized. Gravity effects apply to the home screen, along with lighting effects for app icons. Gesture controls like three-finger swipes to return home or open multitasking are also supported.
Enhanced Productivity Tools
HarmonyOS 5 comes with an upgraded Smart Office suite. As a result, it enhances collaboration between devices. It also integrates AI features and connects with other Huawei ecosystem devices.
AI Integration
Artificial intelligence plays a central role in HarmonyOS 5. It handles everything from personalization tasks to supporting smart services across various usage scenarios. The integrated AI assistant understands and interacts with users through voice commands, text, and images. It supports document translation into 21 languages, content summarization, report creation, and even travel planning.
The assistant can also recognize screen content and provide contextual responses. Additionally, it features a "Circle to Search" function allowing users to mark any screen area for more information or AI chatbot assistance.
Security Features
The operating system also incorporates the new Star Shield security architecture. Consequently, it delivers robust privacy protection. Huawei emphasizes that all applications must undergo strict security checks before appearing in the app store.
Ecosystem Integration
HarmonyOS 5 for PCs aims to build a unified ecosystem across phones, tablets, computers, and other devices. Users can share peripherals like keyboards and mice between devices. Additionally, it supports easy high-speed file transfers.
Release Information
Huawei states that upcoming computer models will come pre-installed with HarmonyOS 5. However, it remains unclear whether existing devices will receive updates to this operating system. Huawei also confirms that the first computer running HarmonyOS PC will officially launch in China on May 19, 2025. More detailed information will be announced during that event.
