The contact tracing system has been updated by Google and Apple to help prevent the CO.VID-19 pandemic from spreading. However, last year, US companies were banned from doing business with Huawei. This means the Chinese tech giant is selling its new products without services from Google. As a result, while Google and Apple are updating the contact tracing system to their devices, many Huawei users are not getting this update.
The “contact tracing system” will detect and identify people who have close contacts with infected people using Bluetooth LE.
In a new report by The Telegraph, Huawei phones that are sold after the ban and don’t have Google apps and services will not have the tracking tool updated. However, there is still no confirmation from Google if older phones released before the ban will get updated or not.
Last year, the Chinese phone maker was in the top three smartphone manufacturers with more than 56.2 million smartphones shipped by the last three months of 2019. However, we don’t know how many of them have Google services and apps.
The latest products of Huawei including the Honor 30 series, Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, and Mate Xs don’t have supports from Google and they totally rely on its App Gallery. Therefore, these phones will not get the contact tracking system update by Google and Apple.
The Chinese tech giant was banned from the US telecommunication network last year due to its close relationship with the Chinese government and was influenced by the tension between the two countries.
