Google Announces Its Partnership With Polis On ‘Journalism AI’ Project

To assist the news industry in creatively making use of AI (Artificial Intelligence), Google has just announced its partnership with Polis on ‘Journalism AI’ project.

To assist the news industry in creatively making use of AI (Artificial Intelligence), Google has just announced its partnership with journalism think-tank, Polis, which was founded in 2006 at London School of Economics and Political Science, to establish ‘Journalism AI’.

The ‘Journalism AI’ project is a part of the Google News Initiative, which will focus on newsrooms research as well as training for the integration of journalism and AI.

Together with the organizing of GNI Innovation Forum, in its statement published on Friday, Google said that next year, a global survey on how the media is currently making use and taking advantage of this technology will be published.

Head of Partnerships and Training of Google News Lab, Matt Cooke, said that the company will also be working with academic institutions and newsrooms to develop the best hand book as well as create free online course on how to integrate the use of AI in newsroom for journalists across the world.

After two years of testing, Google finally introduced a brand new tool, Google Earth Studio. This is an animation tool for 3D imagery and Google Earth’s satellite.

This tool provides graphic specialists with different methods to use resource from Google Earth tool for story telling.

Google sent out invitation to newsroom around the globe to test out its product. The company stated that it has offered journalist free training on different tools. The number of journalist has reach overr 140,000 people.

Cooke said that 16 is the number of languages that the company’s Google tools trainings are available in which includes Thai, Turkish and Indonesian Bahasa.

In November, Google News innitiated an innovation challenge in order to assist Asia-Pacific region publishers and scribes in creating excellent journalism in the age of digital.

Selected projects that can bring new ideas to the news industry will receive a fund up to $300,000 from The Google News Initiative (GNI) Innovation Challenge in Asia-Pacific region. Moreover, the GNI will also support up to 70% of the entire project cost.

As claimed by Google, publishers and journalists in Asia-Pacific region are struggling more and more with how quality journalism can develop well in such a digital age. Journalists are testing with many different approaches to new business models and reporting.
