Asian social media has been talking about “RuiCovery,” a YouTuber from South Korea ever since she revealed herself to be a “virtual human.” And that also means that everything, except her face, is real. Her body, her hair, her voice. They are all real. However, her face is rendered digitally using deepfake technology.
For her fans, this was a shocking revelation since no one noticed anything different about the female YouTuber. With the news, deepfake once again became the center of the discussion, starting a debate on whether governments should regulate it to prevent it from being used for malicious intent.
Rui revealed her secret last month through a YouTube video. She agreed to talk more about why she had decided to hid her true face using deepfake. In an interview with KPCPC, a South Korean news outlet, she said that she used deepfake technology in order to boost her chances of becoming famous on YouTube.
In South Korea, physical appearance is important. Of course, the same is true almost everywhere else. However, the Asian country takes this to a whole new level. South Korea is known for its extremely high beauty standards, the booming cosmetics industry, and plastic surgery services.
Apparently, RuiCovery felt that her appearance doesn’t match South Korean standards. So rather than putting on makeup or getting plastic surgery, she went with artificial intelligence and machine learning. And to be honest, the result is pretty impressive.
Rui became famous on YouTube by covering songs and posting occasional vlogs. Even though some fans claimed that they felt cheated, she doesn’t have any regrets.
Her realistic appearance is created by DOB Studio, a company specializing in making deepfake personas for people who need to upgrade their looks in order to attract more fans on social media.
