Not only is Facebook expanding its business in service segments but the social media giant is also working on it’s a very first operating system made on its own. With the launch of numerous hardware gadgets like Oculus, the company reportedly tries to eliminate the dependence on Google's Android and Apple's iOS of those products in the near future.
According to The Information, the company has been in contact with an expert namely Mark Lucovsky, who built Windows NT in the 2000s. With the help of Lucovsky, Facebook aims to build an operating system from the ground up. As stated by a company’s spokesperson, Facebook just wants to ensure a space for it – not competitors or marketplace – so Facebook has to take action itself.
Generally speaking, the said Facebook-created OS would likely arrive in future products of Facebook rather than traditional products like iPhones or iPads. Take AR glasses as a telling example – it seems to take Facebook several years to launch these glasses with inbuilt software.
To remind, this is not the first time Facebook thinks of such a way to lessen its dependence on Google and Apple. The company once tried to build a smartphone model or to develop a software layer for HTC devices, but none was successful. It’s understandable why Facebook always wants a unique self-developed OS - from that, it would potentially create an independent space for Facebook to test out social interactions or hopefully make a better space for privacy. As for us, let's see how potent and effective the upcoming OS will be!
