Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, tweeted yesterday that the panic over the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, is “dumb.”
On Friday, the number of confirmed cases infected with Coronavirus has reached 100,000 all over the world. The pandemic has claimed the lives of 3,400 people and spread to 90 countries.
A large number of people are in panic mode and there is a shortage of hand sanitizers, face masks, and other necessaries. Companies are asking employees to work from home if their positions allow and forbid corporate travel.
Ever since the Coronavirus outbreak, Tesla stock has seen a decline of 20%. The stock market saw a mass sell-off at mid-February.
Elon Musk has made a name for himself as a vocal celebrity on the Internet. His Twitter account has around 30 million followers from all over the world.
Musk did not elaborate on what he means by saying the panic is “dumb” so his fans are now pretty divided. Some say he was right and we should keep calm, some said that since he was just a carmaker, we should not take medical advice from him.
In just five hours, his tweet has had over 20,000 replies. Many even criticize him for not taking precautions when he is the CEO of a corporation that employees can hardly work from home.
Other tech execs have taken measures to protect the safety of their employees. Facebook recently shut down its Seattle office when one of the staff is tested positive for the virus.
In Bengaluru, a whole office building has been forced to evacuate and work from home after a company’s employee is confirmed to carry the virus.
