Users In Chennai Have Reportedly Faced Most Cyber Attacks In India

The City With Highest Percentage Of Cyber Attacks

On September 11, a study pointed out that about each one out of three users in India faces cyber attacks. Meanwhile, those who are living in Tamil Nadu, Chennai appear more vulnerable to these kinds of attacks than those from other cities.

The IT security company K7 Computing was the one to conduct this study. This company focuses on keeping track of all important components such as Mobile, Windows, Mac, IoT, and Enterprise in up to 20 cities in India including tier-1, tier-2 regions, and metros.

Accordingly, from April 2019 to June 2019, Chennai reportedly had the highest percentage of cyber attacks (48%) over other cities in the tier-1 region. The second slot belonged to Kolkata, West Bengal (41%) while Delhi reported only 28%, the lowest percentage of cyber-attacks in India.

According to the K7 Computing CEO K Purushothaman:

The report stated that the percentage of cyber attacks tends to be higher on working days from Monday to Friday in metros, and Friday is the day with the highest percentage.

Tier-1 And Tier-2 Regions

On average, the top ten infected cities in tier-2 region registered the lower percentage than cities in tier-1 region and metros.

For example, from April to June 2019, Patna faced the most cyber attacks, occupying up to 48% while Guwahati took the second position with 46%, and Lucknow sat on the third position with 45%. On the contrary, Thiruvananthapuram registered 35% of cyber attacks and became the city with the safest percentage.

Ransomware

Also according to the study, fileless attacks and ransomware were growing more rapidly in India. Trojan attacks occupied 72% and mainly aimed at Mac. Adware registered the second slot with 18% and Potentially Unwanted Programmes/Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUP/PUA) occupied 9%.

A large part of users and manufacturers of IoT devices had no awareness of the importance of optimized security, which explains why they have become major victims of cyber attacks.

Most Vulnerable And Hackable Devices

The study listed that the IoT devices at highest risk in India are routers, and the next positions belong to printers, IP cameras, NAS, media players, smart TVs, and set-top boxes.
