The capital of India, New Delhi, was the most polluted capital in the world for three years in a row, according to IQAir.

New Delhi, the capital of India, was the most polluted capital in the world for three years in a row, according to IQAir. IQAir is a group from Switzerland that measures air quality levels of an area based on the concentration of PM2.5, lung-damaging airborne particles.

According to the 2020 World Air Quality Report with data of 106 countries, 35 in 50 most polluted cities in the world were in India. The findings were the result of the annual average of PM2.5 in the country.

Exposure to PM2.5 for a long period of time can cause deadly diseases including cardiac problems and even cancer.

Compared to 2018 and the years before that, the air quality in every Indian city improved. However, in the list of the top 30 most polluted cities, 22 were from India. The report is based on data collected from governmental as well as non-governmental air quality monitors in 106 countries.

The report also pointed out that South Asia was one of the world’s most polluted regions. Among all the Indian cities measured by IQAir, 32% had unhealthy or worse air quality. During the same time period, the figures were 80% in Bangladesh, and 67% in Pakistan.

Air Pollution

Compared to 2019, 2020 witnessed an improvement in air quality in 84% of countries and 65% of global cities due to COVID-19 lockdowns. Last year during the summer months, Delhi had the cleanest air ever.
