According to a recently revealed patent, Apple is developing a new type of sensor that uses lasers to detect contamination in the air.
The patent details the way lasers could detect harmful particles in the air, including pollen and poisonous gas. This technology might someday be featured in an Apple Watch or an iPhone.
Apple has commented nothing on the patent.
The patent outlines how a set of three lasers can detect the direction and speed of airflow without fans, which usually needed for this type of sensors. It also stated that the laser beams could cover different locations to perform measurements of air quality.
While the most obvious use for such a sensor is for smartwatches and phones, some other applications include working on computers and a wider array of other types of wearables.
The sensor might come with an app, which alerts users if causes of concerns with air quality.
