Boycott China Creates 55,000 Local Jobs As Apple Will Reportedly Make iPads And MacBooks In India

As stated in a TOI's report, an Apple’s contract manufacturer is bringing six production lines to India with an aim to make $5 billion worth of smartphones

Ever since COVID-19 broke out from Wuhan, China, international tech giants have been more cautious in doing business in the East Asian country.

Several companies have taken facilities back to their home nations while others eyeing Vietnam, India, and Thailand for manufacturing.

As made-in-India iPhones are already on the market, it appears Apple’s partners are ramping up with their plan to shift more of their facilities out of China.

As stated in a recent report by TOI, a large Apple’s contract manufacturer is bringing six production lines to India with an aim to make $5 billion worth of smartphones for the Indian market as well as export.

A person with insight into the matter said the new facility can provide jobs for over 55,000 local workers in a year. However, the contract manufacturer wants more from the Indian production line than just smartphones.

The source said besides iPhones, the said vendor would also manufacture tablets, laptops, and computers in the next few years. This means good news for Indian users as when Apple doesn’t have to face a hefty import tax once its devices are made locally, they will probably have to pay less for iPads, iMacs, and MacBooks.

The source also said the contract manufacturer’s containers had already arrived in India, ready to join Pegatron, Samsung, Wistron, and Foxconn in answering the Indian government’s incentive scheme.

In a recent statement, communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in the next five years, around 22 manufacturers, both international and local would produce an Rs 11.5 lakh crore worth of goods, resulting in a Rs 7 lakh crore worth of export.
