Apple Is Reportedly Replacing All Butterfly Keyboard With Scissor Switch Design This Fall

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities has just released a timeline for the transition of Apple from the butterfly keyboard to the scissors

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities, has just released a new report on the keyboard of MacBooks. Kuo also included a timeline he thought Apple would follow to replace the butterfly keyboard.

Butterfly To Scissor Switch

This time, Kuo’s report has a more specific time for when Apple will ditch the troublesome butterfly keyboard to switch to reliable scissor-switch one. According to him, the MacBooks introduced in 2020 will bring back the trusted scissors to replace what is currently available on Mac releasing in the past few years.

Along with the prediction of the arrival of a 16-inch MacBook Pro this fall, Kuo added that this version would feature the new (or brought-back) keyboard.

With this new report, Kuo has changed his earlier prediction, which projected that the scissor-switch would make it to the revamped MacBook Air in fall, and the MacBook Pro will follow suit next year.

This year, Apple introduced the MacBook Air with some updates and entry-level MacBook Pros, both with the butterfly keyboards, and its Back to School Promotion.

13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro, as well as MacBook Air of 2019 still feature the butterfly keyboard, and then in 2020, the transition will take place.

Many people believe that the switch to scissors will end the inclusion of the keyboard replacement program, which was first introduced in 2015 for the 12-inch MacBook, to every new device sold. Ever since then, Apple has automatically put newly-released MacBooks to the program.

The keyboard for desktop has always been scissor switches, even when Apple added the butterfly one to MacBook.

Smart Keyboard Adoption

Kuo also said that the iPad Smart Keyboard would become more common among users, thanks to iPadOS 13.

According to his report, the sales for Smart Keyboard will be around 2 million in 2019, followed by 4 million in 2020, and reaches 7 million the following year.

For now, the keyboard is compatible with iPad Pros and the newest iPad Air.
