When accessing highly-secured websites, you will encounter OTP - one-time passcode. Simply, they are SMS messages with a code attachment that are sent to your mobile phones, so that they can verify your identity on the websites. Many users will find the step of inputting the code is uncomfortable, as they have to move between the messages and the browser. Some find it too long or too complicated to write down the codes. But now, engineers from Apple are working on a solution for this step to make it a lot easier, but still trustworthy at the same time.
There are two objectives when it comes to the new change. Firstly, OTP messages can be connected with a URL simply by just including the login URL in the messages. Secondly, the verification process can be standardized through the type of two-factor authentication, as well as OTP, in order that mobile applications and browsers can automatically understand the incoming codes, and extract them to the relevant websites, with no users' unnecessary interaction.
The automation of the verification process is believed to be effective when users will not face risks of scams but accidentally entering codes on the websites. The process implies that if any failures of the auto-complete features happen, this means there is a mismatch between the actual websites users wish to access and the URL of the websites. In this case, the automation process will stop immediately due to the mismatching.
The function of automatically adding OTP of SMS messages has successfully integrated into iOS 13. However, the process has not been made universally as a multi-platform design for every user and has just been backed by Google engineers. If this standard comes into regular practice and, tech giants behind the automation innovation will gradually eradicate companies that live on OTP servicing. As reported by ZDNet, Twillo, one of the leading providers, has shown their interest in the innovative format.
