India is Amazon’s new major market, so it intends to provide more benefits to the locals by making Alexa, its voice assistant understands and interacts in Hindi and some other Indian regional languages.
Last year, Amazon also released a new category of skills named Cleo so that Indian users can take part in Alexa’s learning process. Here are some of the languages people have been interacting with the voice assistant in, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Kannada, and more.
What users do to help Cleo will enrich Alexa’s data availability, machine learning, and computing power. Her system will grow naturally when more data is filled in.
Cleo was launched on the 14th of August, 2018, and with it, users have been teaching Alexa more about the country’s languages.
In a statement, the company explained how Cleo would work:
According to Rohit Prasad, Head Scientist and Vice President of Alexa, learning Hindi and some other languages was crucial for the voice assistant as it enabled it to overcome many issues related to content and culture.
He explained by saying that a joke that an English speaker found funny might not have the same effect in Hindi and some other India’s regional languages. That is why they had to provide Indians with a wholesome experience.
Prasad is having several teams working to help Alexa learn; among them, the Bengaluru team is quite big. Here is what he said about Amazon’s ambition with her:
