Free Photoshop Camera App Brings Photoshop's Power To Your Smartphones

Photoshop Camera is free and is compatible with both iOS and Android but only users of the recent Galaxy, OnePlus, and Pixel phones are able to use it

Adobe launched Photoshop Camera yesterday. The app is filled with filters that can totally change your faces and the pictures’ background.

There are several cool filters to try out. One of them replace the sky in photos with a magical moon or clouds. Another puts you in a Black Mirror-like world, and there is one that can make you look like you are in a comic book.

Photoshop Camera is free to use and is compatible with both iOS and Android. However, only users of the recent Galaxy, OnePlus, and Pixel phones are able to use it.

Before the official launch yesterday, a preview version was introduced back in November.

Much as the name suggests, Photoshop Camera and Photoshop have little in common, except for the fact that both of them work on images.

With this app, you have a few editing tools like exposure, contrast, and saturation. However, the point of this app is the wide range of filters. Those who want to adjust the photos can tap on the magic wand and the app will dial in changes so that you do not have to bother with all the settings.

According to Abhay Parasnis, Adobe’s CTO, what they aim at with this app is to bring Photoshop’s abilities to your phones.

Photoshop Camera sounds cool enough but the challenge here is how Adobe can convince users to switch to its app instead of numerous filters available out there. Adobe has its own advantages in dealing with photos but launching an app means it has entered a head-on competition with social media sites like Snapchat and Instagram.

However, Adobe team said they did not intend to compete with these sites, on the contrary, they plan to work with them by having their filters featured on these platforms. They have even thought about having their filters built directly into phones’ camera apps.

Those who have used Photoshop Camera reported that the app was fun to play with. Opening it and you will see dozen of filters, each with several variations to choose from.

The food filters are nothing to write home about, all they do is to change photos’ colors. But the ones for face are pretty elaborate and cool.

The company announced they would add more filters in the future and also their partnerships with specific creators and artists.

Photoshop Camera has had some filters made in this way. One of them is a collaboration with Billie Eilish, which puts you in a background with eerie sky and Blohsh logo rain.

For now, creators have not been able to make money out of their creations but in the future, Parasnis said, there would be lenses around venues or events that can bring money back to artists.

The ultimate goal for Adobe is to draw more people into its ecosystem with smaller apps and then turning some of them into paid tools for professionals.

According to Parasnis, that plan is going well and Photoshop Camera is a stepping stone toward that goal.
