Xiaomi Has Revealed How Its In-Display Selfie Camera Works

While a lot of companies have been working on the in-display front camera, Xiaomi has posted a teaser indicating a working prototype for this idea.

As we have learned, Xiaomi is working on an in-display selfie camera to get rid of the notch on the phone’s front. While a lot of companies have also been working on the same idea, the Chinese phone maker has posted a teaser indicating a working prototype of a solution for in-display camera.

The video popped up hours after OPPO released their own video showing a prototype of its in-display camera solution. It’s exciting to see both of them working to ditch the notch as well as the pop-up front-facing camera and actually have a prototype to show.

Back to the main story here, Xiaomi’s senior VP Wang Xiang, besides the video, also shared four pictures via his official Twitter account to provide viewers with some insights about how the in-display cam works.

First of all, as revealed by the phone maker, there are several “in-house” technologies that make the in-display camera possible. To make the camera work, it developed a custom phone screen with a small transparent area. This area is made of “special low-reflective glass” and high transmittance.

By Xiaomi’s explanation, during the camera-off mode, the transparent area functions as a normal screen, displaying content and everything. According to Xiang’s post, the phone maker is making the display from the transparent anode and transparent cathode around the organic luminescent material to make sure light from outside can reach the sensor lying under the screen.

In addition, the Chinese firm said that it’s working on a 20MP in-display camera. To ensure the sensor captures light, it has designed a “display-embedded” cam combination to make the screen work like the camera lens. This way, the sensor will get more light through the transparent screen and the lens to generate high-quality selfie shots.
