We can be sure for now that with the release of Android Q, Android Beam will be deprecated. The question now is what we are going to use for sharing files cross-platform. The new Fast Share has the potential but unfortunately, it will not be available to all Android devices.
To address this problem, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Oppo have joined hands to develop a way for cross-platform file sending.
According to XDA-Developers, this alliance will work toward a new protocol for P2P file transfer. The collaboration was spotted on Weibo, China-specific networking site. The highlight here is the relation between OnePlus and Oppo, which comes in the form of parent-subsidiary. While the former company does have its own way of file transfer called FileDash, this alliance may result in OnePlus phones having the new method in the future.
XDA also noted that this new way of file transferring will probably rely on Bluetooth LE for connection, meaning we may expect a speed of 20 megabytes per second. Two interesting features of this method are users do not need to use the same phone with the other person to be able to send files, and there is no limitation on what kind of data they can transfer.
This news means more to users in China than anyone else in the world as Google Services is not usually available for smartphones in the country. However, if the alliance can attract more manufacturers, the method might make its way to a larger number of phones all over the world.
According to Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, the new protocol will make it to reality by the end of next month. As it is still at the infant stage, we have not known anything about which phones are compatible and whether the technology will come to any other market outside of China.
