For those who are wondering what kind of spacesuits its astronauts will wear on the space, Virgin Galactic, founded by the billionaire Richard Branson, has offered the latest answer: a hi-tech suit made by Under Armour.
According to Richard Branson, his spaceflight company has collaborated with Under Armour, a Baltimore-headquartered sportswear maker to design the spacesuits that are suitable for Virgin’s customers, astronauts, and ground staff. On January 25, both of the companies published the press releases concerning that Under Armour will train the astronauts how to use its products.
Different to the NASA’s bulky spacesuits, Virgin promises to bring the more fashionable ones to its customers. However, up to now, the designs have been kept in a secret. According to Bloomberg, Virgin will pressurize the cabins in the spacecraft, and therefore, the pressure suits are unnecessary.
The spokesman from the spaceflight company also pointed out that their suits will aim to the simplicity. That means all the spacecraft or aircraft may use conventional protective clothing, similar to that of a commercial flight. A new question has just given that what Under Armour will do to ensure the protection capacity of the spacesuits, not to mention its athleisure threads.
It is likely that Under Armour will be the key factor to help Virgin Galactic confirm its position in the space tech market. The coming spacesuits are expected to overcome all of the existing barriers Branson’s company has faced.
At present, Virgin is testing the first flights. Before the commercial flights are conducted for the first time, the company will introduce the official designs of its spacesuits. It may be at the end of 2019. Nothing is certain and we may have a lot of time to wait.
