UK chiefs of security have recently announced that the risks the US concerns over Huawei tech in the superfast 5G were controllable.
According to an NCSC’s spokesperson (short for National Cyber Security Center), they did have concerns over whether Huawei was able to cause any security threats. However, they had come up with enhancements that they thought the company should make.
As for legislation for 5G, Prime Minister Theresa May’s representative said that it was still undergoing consideration and lists of options have been drawn up, but they had not yet decided.
This reaction from the UK government is the opposite of what the US expected the country and its other allies to do. There have been reports on meetings between the US representatives and those of the European Commission to bring out the risk that the Chinese government could take advantage of the technology to spy.
The US’s concern did not come out of the blue though. The relationship between the US and Huawei has been uneasy recently, resulting in the company’s CFO arrest and the bombardment of accusations the US made about Huawei. Before that, the country had made constant warnings for Huawei because of the possibility that the Chinese government can interfere and use its technology for spying.
Huawei has already acted to clear its name by saying that the Chinese government did not own the company and the technology in question had already appeared in the 4G network.
It also denied the concern over the security of the network, which might let the Chinese government sneak into and spy on the Western world.
New Zealand and Australia have taken side with the US in this matter by starting to forbid the use of the company’s equipment.
According to MI6’s chief, Sir Alex Younger, the matter was complicated but banning Huawei completely might be too extreme and unnecessary.
