To expand the presence of its app and service to more consumers, Spotify has just announced to launch a Kids app where children at the age of three and higher can listen to their music both offline and online, as well as explore recommendations and playlists compiled by experts, etc. Additionally, the app also filters music selection so that songs will not include explicit content.
The launch of this Kids app is the first-ever in the online music-streaming market, where children and their parents sign in the same app, use the same plans, with different logins only. However, Spotify believes that kids should have their own space for listening to music that is free of ads and explicit content.
Spotify Kids will include hand-picked playlists with various categories including Stories, artist/groups, Spotify Originals, seasonal, genres, Activities, top hits, and Movies & TV. All playlists are created by human editors instead of algorithms, chosen following guidelines about appropriate content for kids.
According to the company, the editors are from well-known players in kids’ entertainment business such as BookBeat, Public Service, Universal Pictures, Discovery Kids, Disney, and Nickelodeon.
Especially, the app will grow with the children from preschool to higher, as long as they are not ready to use the same app with their parents.
In the app version for smaller kids, they can listen to soundtracks, lullabies, and singalongs that are aimed at little children. Older users can access their own playlists and songs, which include popular tracks appropriate for their age. Their parents will choose their age when launching the app.
The company will also add more content to the app including podcasts, audiobooks, and stories, and build parental controls and settings so that parents can further customize the app.
Spotify Kids will look completely different from the adult version, it will be bright and colorful with the look and feel varying between age groups. For instance, smaller kids will see softer, more character-based artwork while older ones will get a more detailed experience. Alex Norström, Chief Premium Business Officer of the company said:
