Snapchat has just added another new feature called 3D Camera Mode, which allows you to give Snaps more perspectives.
Since this function requires Apple’s TrueDepth camera system, the technology behind its Animojis and Face ID, only owners of iPhones X and above can make use of 3D Camera Mode.
According to Snapchat, over time, this feature will be possible to create on Android devices and other camera sensors, but the company did not say a specific timeline of when you can expect that to happen.
Those who do have a compatible iPhone, congratulations, now you can use 3D Lenses, 3D Filters, and 3D Effects with Snapchat’s 3D Camera Mode, users can save what they have created in camera roll, post it on Stories, or even share it with friends in chat.
For now, the function can only work with the selfie camera, but when Snap’s Spectacles 3 smart glasses are launched, taking Snaps with 3D content will be possible.
Explaining the technology behind this new feature, Snapchat said that it made use of Apple’s TrueDepth Camera to take a high-quality picture of users and then it added the data on depth in to create an image that looks like 3D. So when you take the picture, you have to wiggle and rotate the camera.
Snapchat said that it hoped to provide another tool for its 203 million users so that they have another layer of expression.
Snapchat has been working on three-dimensional effect and augmented reality for years now, and the new feature is just the result of the company’s effort. And with the history of the competition between Snapchat and Instagram, we may see a similar or cooler feature coming to the world’s largest picture-sharing platform. It is just a matter of time.
