Samsung Has To Answer In Court For Misleading Galaxy Phone Ads Showing Water-Resistance

Samsung has been in court in Australia answering for the accusation that its ads have fooled users of the waterproof level of its Galaxy lineup.

Over the last three to four years, a lot of Samsung Galaxy phones have been said to have a water resistance rating of IP68, which translates to coming out of being submerged under 1.5 meter of water for half an hour intact.

ACCC (short for The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) argued that this IP68 does not apply to all bodies of water. Ever since 2016, Samsung has been advertising that its Galaxy phones are safe for places like the ocean and swimming pools. According to ACCC, these advertisements were misleading as they showed the use of these devices in areas that are unsuitable for them.

Samsung has been in hot water as early as 2016 when Consumer Reports said that the Galaxy S7 had not survived a water test. In the company’s advertisement, the phone can withstand being dunked into a fish tank.

In answer to this, Samsung said that this was a flaw in manufacturing and only a small number of phones carried this defect. However, users around the world continue to report issues with the water resistance ability of Samsung devices.
