The investigation into the underhanded business dealings of the Korean giant went on for years, set in motion 6 years ago when a politician in the country leaked a Samsung Electronics internal guideline for stymying as well as breaking up unions. After being stopped, the investigation was reopened after prosecutors raided the company under a separative investigation, from which they got thousands of similar documents that were related to busting unions.

Last year, 32 people were indicted by prosecutors, including the chairman, for organized crime to mobilize the entire firm to its full capacity. Prosecutors accused them of threatening to cut wages for employees of unions.

In separate news, Samsung Electronics’ parent company Samsung, has figured in a scandal that resulted in the impeachment and imprisonment of South Korea’s former President Park Geun-hye. Park committed charges related to bribery that involved Samsung among other firms.

In 2017, Samsung’s Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, had to take a five-year sentence for allegedly embezzling and bribing Park, but he was then released as an appeals court cut decreased and suspended his punishment. In April, the Supreme Court of South Korea discovered that the appeals court undervalued the bribes at Rs 21.3 crore ($3 million), which put them closer to Rs 49.7 crore ($7 million). The case was also put back in an appeals court for reviewing with more scrutiny.

Samsung Electronics has been charged with misleading ethical code, employment of child laborers, and making workers work in inhumane conditions. Last year, after  more than 100 people died from illnesses related to work including cancer, its co-President apologized for its failure in managing health risks properly.

However, these incidents don’t seem to affect Xnxubd - Samsung much as its stock rose after Lee Sang-hoon was sentenced.
