All Niantic has done until now was just a playtest. The real deal here is the Pokemon Go experience made possible by 5G

Niantic is looking to take advantage of the new 5G connectivity to make Pokemon Go 5G, making it the main Pokemon game.
Niantic has always had an interesting relationship with the Pokemon company as it made Pokemon Game separately from any other games of the latter. With 5G begins to take shape all over the world, paving the way for faster connectivity, the Pokemon company sees this as a wakeup call to renegotiate the terms of their relationship.
The Original Vision
Back in March 2014, Pokemon Go started as an April fool joke. What gave the folks at Niantic the idea of the game was the Google Maps Pokemon Challenge. The company was still part of Google back then.

You can easily realize Google’s vision in the video of Google Maps: Pokemon Challenge. Several features of the video would make their way to the Pokemon Go. Many of them were way ahead of their time.
With 5G Onboard
The video was made more than five years ago. With the advancements which have been made since then, most of what we saw there is now entirely reasonable and possible.
The Shared AR Experience Tutorial video below is from Niantic. The whole system has been made available and is ready to be implemented into Pokemon Go. Now users can sync features from multiple devices into one single vision you can view from a handful of devices.

This is something that will impress and surprise someone living in 2016 and if you want way back to 2006, everything would blow people’s minds.
The demo is a stand-still photo session. But imagine what we will get once it is connected to the fast speed of the 5G system. Niantic’s developers know this well and what they are doing is to prepare for our future.
Preparations Already Made
Niantic is part of GSMA Cloud XR Forum and what it does is more like a collaborative effort, an agreement the company made to pool resources. What they commit here is the development of VR and AR in the world where 5G might be dominant.

Niantic, the Open Edge Initiative with Carnegie Mellon University, and Deutsche Telekom are collaborating to make Niantic’s platform available on the 5G network and MobiledgeX Edge Servers of Deutsche Telekom. This has been going on since 2018, evidence of an ongoing effort spanning over a few years to prepare for the bloom of 5G.
Niantic’s Dream
According to Rob Guisti, the AR game integrations technical lead of Niantic, the company is opening a way for new possibilities when it comes to design. They are working to realize the dream of many to be a real Pokemon Trainer. And there are not many ways they can follow to bring fantasy to our real physical world.
Niantic mentions Buddy Adventure business and provided another hint. They said that they were working with Qualcomm to bring a new VR device to reality to seamlessly meld the real and the digital world.
Their original dream is now their ultimate goal. All they have done until now was just a playtest. The real deal here is the Pokemon Go experience made possible by 5G.
