Last year, L’Oreal – a giant in the cosmetics industry – announced that it was in the process of acquiring ModiFace - beauty app maker which supports augmented reality. After that, the company has been carrying out experiments of virtual makeup try-on on some of its brands by letting buyers try on different makeup shades in their selfies or live clips. Now, Amazon is going to be the next stop for this AI-powered beauty technology.

Starting from today, Japanese and US Amazon customers can use Live Mode through the app on their Android smartphones. The iOS version will be launched later this year. Thanks to the information provided by different cosmetics brands, the descriptions and the images on social media, with this new AI technology, buyers can now try on a few different lipstick shades using the front camera of their phones. Shoppers can now breathe a sigh of relief when it comes to choosing which lipstick colors will suit them.

"Live Mode" is definitely not the initial wave created by AI regarding the beauty section. Last year, an at-home makeup studio was unveiled by Target. At that very same year, IL MAKIAGE has also worked on a shade-matching algorithm aiming at finding the perfect makeup shade without having to see your face. We can clearly see that AI technology is starting to be widely applied in different sections of the cosmetics industry.
On the skincare side, a 3D face scanning application was recently announced by Neutrogena earlier this year. The app will help you decide which kinds of masks are best- suited for your skin. How we buy and choose cosmetics is certainly changing day by day, resulting in the fact that a retail giant like Amazon finding its way to get into this market.
