Samsung has been ramping up its research and development process lately. It not only putting out a remarkable series of its flagship in just one year (Samsung Galaxy S10), the company also filed the cutting edge Samsung Galaxy Fold. It is the first foldable smartphone to be introduced and marketed. Although the Fold never actually reached consumers’ hands and was riddled with technical problems, it is a testament as to the technical proficiency of the company and their potentials.
While the company has yet to leave the market for foldable handsets, at the moment currently experimenting with different foldable designs that are hoped to rectify the problems seen in the original Fold. The company is said to be embarking yet on another adventure: A pair of foldable augmented reality glasses.
The Patent
While there had yet to be any official statements from Samsung regarding the matter, the evidence appeared under documents filed by Samsung to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Aside from specific descriptions of the device, diagrams and illustrations were also included to give us quite a good idea of what we might see in the future coming from the South Korean’s giant.
From the illustrations in the filed documents, Samsung’s glasses may have a very similar design to what’s enclosed within. The frames of the glasses are quite thick to house all of the techs needed to make it work. It was described that the glasses’ hardware and the built-in screen automatically activated when the user unfolds the glasses. To display information to the users, the glasses are equipped with a projector to beam the data to the lenses and within the wearer’s field of view. The patent also referred to an ARM-based chip to be the core of the rumored AR glasses.
Foldability
The thing that makes this pair of glasses ‘foldable’ are the hinges found in the temple of the glasses. That is where the prism and the projector are placed to beam information onto the lenses. This also makes maintenance quite easy, since you only need to trade out the temple to get the glasses back to working order.
May Not Be A Close Future Thing
It was also mentioned that the final market design of the glasses may change drastically from the original filings. The patent only serves to show how the concept of smart glasses may work and does not promise a close release date, either. The company’s resources are currently focused on fixing the Galaxy Fold and may subject other foldable devices to the same process in the future.
