Huawei said that Its Mate X foldable phone is selling around 100,000 each month ever since the phone was released in China back in November last year. The phone is for the Chinese market only and each unit is retailed for 16,999 yuan or Rs. 170,005.
This figure is smaller than the sales of its rival, the Galaxy Fold. Last year, Young Sohn, the executive of Samsung claimed that the company has sold a million units of Galaxy Fold. However, this figure was proven inaccurate at CES 2020 when a company’s representative said that it sold somewhere between 400,000 to 500,000 units.
Samsung and Huawei are the two pioneers to bring foldable phones to the market. In the CES event in 2019, there were plenty of prototypes for this smartphone form factor. However, it was Samsung that brought the first foldable phone to the general public. The next two companies to release their takes on the foldable phone idea later this year are Microsoft and Motorola with the foldable Duo and foldable Razr.
Introduced at Mobile World Congress 2019, the Mate X was planned to be launched in July last year. However, after Samsung delayed the release of its Galaxy Fold due to issues with the phone’s display, Huawei did the same thing and reschedule the release of the Mate X to November.
Huawei has not elaborated on an exact launch date for the Huawei Mate X in other markets outside of China. All we know is that the phone might be launched in Europe in 2020’s first quarter. The MWC 2020 taking place next month might see the debut of the second iteration of the Mate X.
This year’s CES has hosted a bunch of ideas of foldable devices beyond smartphones. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is one of them.
