Microsoft is going to release a new Windows version that’s meant to change how users interact with their computers as well as our ideas of what a PC is. Here’s everything we already know about Windows 10X and the compatible devices for 2021.
Windows 10X isn’t an upgrade from Windows 10 but rather a version designed for lightweight, dual-screen, affordable devices. It was originally meant to feature on the Surface Neo, but after it was delayed, the operating system seems to be shifted to more conventional devices and the support for dual screens will come later.
Developing the support for a two-screen device is more complex than for a one-screen device. The reason is that users may want to run dual programs side by side, or a program on one half and the keyboard on the other, or playing a movie on one screen only.
What Microsoft has achieved is making Windows 10X run easily on two screens as well as one, providing all the benefits we mentioned earlier. The tech giant built the operating system on Windows Core OS, a new initiative that’s basically a lightweight, back-to-basics version of Windows, which can easily be tailored to work on different types of devices and form factors.
With Windows Core OS, Windows is more versatile and modular, by leaving out some features that have been around for decades. It will eventually underpin Windows on all devices, but for now, it is running as Windows 10X on the Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and HoloLens 2.
Windows 10X will not run Win32 desktop apps, meaning you won’t see programs like Chrome and Photoshop, but you can use Microsoft staples such as the Edge browser and other apps that run from the web.
Microsoft will add support for Win32 apps eventually though they will be run in a sealed-off container for the sake of performance and security. Once you close the programs, they cannot affect battery life or interfere with the system. This way, Windows 10X may not suffer from any slowdown issues and will run faster on lower-end devices.
Old features like Device Manager and Control Panel will not appear in Windows 10X while the Start menu will look more streamlined and cleaner. In addition, the icons are centered on the taskbar instead of aligned on the left and the Action Center will come in a new design as well.
In Windows 10X, File Explorer will get more web-focused as One Drive is more deeply integrated than it is in Windows 10. User security in this operating system is also better. Apart from Win32 apps, other parts will also run in their own virtual box that prevents malware and viruses from accessing the system settings or causing any damage.
When Microsoft actually releases a dual-screen device, we will be able to experience even more benefits.
