Facebook Is Testing A Tool Allowing Users To Transfer Videos And Photos To Google Drive

Recently, Facebook announced a new function that allows its users to store their videos and photos uploaded to the site on other storage services. Google Photos will be the first to have this ability.

This new function will work just like the one allowing us to download our information. Some users may have already had backups for their visual data somewhere, but for those who have not, this is a very quick and easy way to do so.

The new feature of Facebook has not yet been rolled out officially yet as the company is testing it and gathering users’ feedbacks.

The tool is just part of a more extensive scheme involving big names like Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Google, and Microsoft. The plan is called Data Transfer Project, with the ultimate goal is to allow everyone on the Internet to transfer data among service providers when they want it. So if Facebook gets positive feedbacks from users, you might expect a full rollout and participation of iCloud or OneDrive.

This kind of service has raised lots of concerns over users’ privacy. To address this, Steve Satterfield, the Director of Privacy and Public Policy of Facebook, said that the data would be protected by encryption and users would have to provide their password to verify themselves before anything is transferred.

It appears that the Data Transfer Project was initiated in answer to the GDPR (stand for the European General Data Protection Regulation).

The Photo Transfer tool is currently being tested in Ireland. And if Facebook gets positive feedbacks, a full rollout will be scheduled for the first six months of 2020.
