Mark Zuckerberg Plans To Split Facebook In Two

A new privately encrypted messaging space is coming?

In fact, Zuckerberg first published a 3,200-word blog post mentioning this specific plan last month. He wanted to form two different spaces under the name of Facebook. A "town square", as a public forum and a "living room" - a private encrypted place.

From such wording, we still aren’t clear about such spaces but it’s likely to involve merging some messaging platforms, like Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp, into a unique service, an interoperable and encrypted one. About the timeline for the plan, Zuckerberg answered an analyst during the earnings call. He thought that this would be the central focus for Facebook in the next five years or even longer. It's further noted that the company will need at least one year for all the consulting with the experts, the government as well as law enforcement. All that consulting is necessary before the launch of such private service.

Deal with messaging issues

Zuckerberg believed that there are many important contents and safety issues in messaging. Since Facebook cannot see the messages, they need to have to right tools to handle them. According to him, this approach is the results of a change in how his company builds its products.

For Facebook, this service could totally come out years ago and from that, they can try and fix the issues they encounter. However, now, they want to be more proactive towards social issues and deal with them from the roots.

Later on, during the call, CFO Dave Wehner shared that it’s a near-term, lower priority for Facebook to monetize its private messaging components. For more details about the plan, Zuckerberg will be revealing much more about it at the annual developer conference of the company.
