According to Facebook, the rebuilt Messenger app will load twice as fast while being 75% less large in size. The reason is that it now has fewer code lines.
On Monday, Facebook said that it will roll out a faster, simpler Messenger version for iOS users. This launch will take place over the next few weeks.
According to the tech giant, the rebuilt Messenger app will load twice as fast while being 75% less large in size. This means it will take users less time to launch the app, download, and update, including those with older iPhone models or in areas that have poor connectivity.
In a statement, Facebook said that it has reduced the core code of Messenger by 84%, down to 360,000 lines of code from over 1.7 million. The company also said that features have been rebuilt to fit a simplified infrastructure. There are now fewer line codes so the app is more responsive and lighter, and fewer code lines allow engineers to innovate more quickly.
The social giant says that there are over 1 billion users on Messengers.
During the rebuild, users won’t immediately see some features but the company says that they will be back soon. It’s also noted by the firm that this is the foundation to fulfill its vision for interoperability and private messaging as part of its plan to merge Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
In separate news, Facebook is bringing 3D photos to more users. 3D Photos will analyze your 2D photo and slice it into layers, you can see the image from different angles by scrolling or tilting your phone. Although it is definitely an interesting feature, this feature was only available for dual-camera phones. The feature needs dual-camera to figure out the distance of objects in images to be able to slice them. As a result, this feature cannot run on single-camera phones. In India, a lot of people use single-camera smartphones so not many people have got the chance to experience this benefit.
