Facebook initially unveiled its 3D photo feature in 2018, then shared the feature’s a month later. But at the time, if you didn’t have phones with dual cameras, you could not create a 3D photo on your own.
Now, the social giant has updated this feature, rolling it out to users with a single camera. 3D photos are created through the analysis of a 2D image and slicing it into a lot of layers moving separately as you scroll or tilt the phone. This is an interesting feature to try out.
However, the one problem with this feature was that it relied on the dual-camera feature for helping the system figure out the distance, which in turn resulting in how the image would be sliced. That meant those with the iPhone SE as well as other single-camera smartphones couldn’t use this feature.
However, over the past few years, Facebook’s computer vision team has been working to make the feature available for these users. And the team has finally made it. with the advances, many people that own single-camera handsets should be able to use the 3D photo feature. Now, the Google Pixels phones are supported, along with iPhones from the 7th gen and afterward. In terms of Android smartphones, there are too many of them so it’s hard to say which is compatible with the feature and which is not, but you will have the answer when installing the next Facebook update and take a picture.
