An Amazon VP Decided To Quit The Company, But For What Reason?

For the time being, there is nothing can ensure that his resignation can lead to other high-profile departures.

Recently, Amazon’s dismissal of labor critics has raised tons of disagreements among its headquarters. This seemingly led to the resignation of the AWS vice president Tim Bray, which is considered to be one of his attempts to teach whistleblowers obsessing with unnecessary worries about insufficient COVID-19 protections at warehouses "a lesson".

He holds his belief in Amazon’s huge efforts to make its warehouse safe, but he is aware of the truth told by the staff that the company’s critics had been sacked owing to a vein of toxicity as well. If he maintained his position, he would be forced to advocate actions that he detested.

The former VP recalled a story of the past that Amazon appeared to face criticism because of its threatening, or actual dismissal of the “disobeyed employees”. Some staff revealed that they were nearly pressurized to quit the job due to their participation in climate change protests, while others were fired after partaking in campaigns for better COVID-19 safety measures.

In the past, when being asked about a similar issue, Amazon blamed its fired climate change activists for violating policies on external communication and dismissed COVID-19 protesters due to their breaking the social distancing rules. According to Bray, leaders could have built the regulations for participating in those activities, rather than sacking them straightforwardly.

Additionally, he also indicated that he had tried to stop this move through as many proper channels as he could think of, but denied to go into details.

For the time being, there is nothing can ensure Bray’s resignation can lead to other high-profile departures. But one thing can, it is that Amazon totally doesn’t want to lose any of its leaders. If the situation should really happen, it only causes the tech giant to be under scrutiny at the moment when the whole world is looking closely at labor issues.
