Amazon is reportedly drafting the potential laws to regulate its facial recognition technology. It is quite ironic that the famous online retailer has tried to build federal laws showing how to deploy its own technology while it is still developing and providing facial recognition software for police forces.
However, according to the Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, as reported by Recode, that is a part of the company's plan. This situation has sparked a question of what tech giants could do to control its tech.
Previously, the company has asked the U.S government to apply regulations on facial recognition technology, and therefore, it can deal with criticism relating to its own techs like the Rekognition software. Now Jeff Bezos is obviously raising his game.
At the event of Alexa gadgets on September 23, Jeff Bezos commented on the matter. He said:
Back in August, the US politician Bernie Sanders vowed that he would ban law enforcement forces from utilizing facial recognition technology. That could be the reason why Amazon and Jeff Bezos are proposing a few potential regulations. At least these self-imposed regulations would be better than their losing all the contacts with the police.
