According to a statement from the U.S. government, a test taken in the Pacific Ocean on May 16 witnessed a spectacular scene of an unmanned airplane shot down by a potent laser weapon installed on the US Navy Ship USS Portland. In the video captured, the weapon released a powerful ray at the drone that seemingly caught fire at no time.
This newly-developed technology which is called LWSD MK 2 MOD 0 is an invention of Northrup Grumman allowing ships to defeat drones and smaller enemy boats. As reported recently, many countries are hunting the tech, simply owing to their desire to gain a position in the global-scale arms race that has been created to boost border security and prevent outer threats like drones and missiles.

In the meantime, there is also a 50-kilowatt laser weapon system namely Dragonfire being researched in the UK. Sharing similar goals, Russia, China, India, Iran, and Turkey are working on their own energy weapons as well.
As for the US’s weapon system, it has been studied since the 1960s, but until now it made the difference. The Navy stated the test was its prototype that used a high-energy class solid-state laser that is considered to lead the way for weapon systems of the future.

As posted on CNN, this new weaponry system is predicted to be installed with a destructive laser weapon that can generate 150 kilowatts of power. Compared to previously tested powerful systems that had 14 and 30-kilowatt lasers, the latest US tech proved its devastating power to be top-notch.
Following the success of the US Navy, the country’s Air Force is also attempting to develop new energy weapons. This was initiated by a US-based military contractor namely Raytheon that transferred its first counter-UAS system to the Air Force.

As a matter of fact, the military’s move usually does not bring any positive sign. International skirmishes with the presence of energy weapons have been recorded since February of this year when the US Navy accused the Chinese warship of firing a laser weapon at its surveillance aircraft.
