POCO M2 Pro Review

Design

Poco M2 Pro looks a lot like Redmi Note 9 Pro with a slight difference is the edgier take on the Aura Balance design.

Look on the rear and you will find a Pixel-like look. But unlike Pixel phones, Poco chooses a Gorilla Glass 5 panel, which is prone to catch fingerprints and scuffs. This means you will have to spend time keeping the phone clean.

The side-mounted fingerprint sensor doubles as the power button and works lighting fast.

Look at the bottom and you will see USB-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack. While there is no IP rating to count on, the Poco M2 Pro is splash resistant, kind of what you expect when you get caught in the rain.

Display

Poco M2 Pro features a large display measuring 6.67 inches with Full HD+ resolution. The screen is interrupted by a camera cutout placed at the center. The refresh rate is nothing to write home about but it isn’t bad either, standing at 60Hz.

The standard color profile is pretty well-balanced but the default setting tends to lean towards oversaturation.

The peak brightness stands at 452 nits, which is enough for outdoor viewing. However, the glossy panel proves to be a nuisance under sunlight with its reflection.

Performance

Under the hood, Poco M2 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 720G, with six Kryo 465 Silver cores, two Kryo 460 Gold cores, and an Adreno 618 GPU.

Compared to its competitors, the phone’s performance is more than good, with the ability to handle almost anything a typical user would ever need. You will rarely feel the lack of power as 6GB of RAM is enough for multitasking.

Poco M2 Pro can handle PUBG well, even with graphics turned on to eleven, it just warms up a little bit.

Battery

The battery on this phone is 5,000mAh, a leap from the 4,500mAh on Poco X2.

In a test, the phone achieves seven hours and 27 minutes of screen on time. With the 33W charger comes with the handset, users can fill the power cell in 1 hour and 18 minutes.

Software

Poco M2 Pro runs on MIUI and users can tweak and change it according to what they like.

If you don’t like some pre-installed apps, you can always disable them. And weird enough, the phone has apps like Helo, the one among the 59 apps banned by the Indian government.

The phone has Poco Launcher rather than the MIUI launcher, with smart categorizing and app drawer.

Camera

Poco M2 Pro photography power is made up of a 48MP main snapper, an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor.

In an outdoor environment, the photo quality isn’t so bad with colors on the warmer side and a slightly saturated tone.

While on paper, you have a 48MP sensor, the pixel binning technology means your photos are only 12MP with evidence of grain and the lack of details.

Switching to the ultra-wide camera and you will see the over-saturated problem again, with more severity. The color accuracy is different between the primary camera and the ultra-wide one. The highlight here is the portrait mode with excellent edge detection.

The 5MP macro camera does a decent job taking pictures up close. There are not much detail or resolution highlights here but you can play around with it to have some shots from different angles.

However, that is for the situations when you have enough light.

In low light, Poco M2 Pro takes pictures with lots of grain. If you want a phone to shoot at night or is more versatile, getting one from Realme is a better choice.

The phone is capable of shooting 4K videos at 30FPS. Users record with the ultrawide and macro lenses at 1080p.

Inconsistent exposure is to be expected as the phone often produces brighter exposure.
