Owning an unapologetic and asymmetrical pop-up camera, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom has been ahead of other phones in the same price bracket when it comes to the unique appearance. In a word, the handset has a great look alongside dedicated software and an eye-catching UI, not to mention a potent battery, great processing power, and impressive cameras that will never make you disappointed.
That said, its hefty weight or large screen size might land you in trouble, but if you’re looking for a powerful device for either work or entertainment, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is no doubt one of the best smartphone you should buy.
Price and availability
Currently, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is available in several markets, including Asian countries, Europe, Australia, UK, etc. According to the company, it has yet to come up with any plans about bringing the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom to the US market.
First launched on June 7, 2019 in India, the device will set you back around Rs. 39,990. At this price segment, users can opt for an OnePlus 7 Pro or Huawei P30 Pro, whose prices also lying on the border between mid-range and high-end products.
The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom comes in three color options, so users can pick up one in Jet Black, Mist Pink, or Ocean Green.
Display
The Oppor Reno 10 Zoom offers a 6.6-inch AMOLED display – it’s safe to say that you will hardly be able to see such a big screen on other smartphones in the same price range.
You’re getting high-end experiences with the screen because it’s basically an AMOLED display that is drafted with a 1090x2340 resolution. The pixel density even reaches up to 387 pixels per inch – a really high level for a smartphone.
Even though both the handset and its screen are large in size, the fact is that users will have a pop-up camera for selfie other than getting a waterdrop notch in front of the face like what you might see on many smartphones currently launched in the market. Additionally, the display only accounts for over 93% of the surface, meaning that a thin bezel on top and a slightly thicker chin at the bottom take up the rest.
In real-world use, the screen delivers impressive quality with sharply bold colors and high max brightness. As a result, you can run popular apps, watch videos or view photos and other types of media without any hassle, although the overall quality won’t be on par with some flagship phones like Samsung Galaxy S10, which also features similar screen tech.
Of course, the screen quality appears to be an all-around advantage of Oppo Reno 10x Zoom at this price range. Without a doubt, you’d rarely have a chance to find a smartphone model with a series of high-end display technology outside of the “premium” tier in the market right now.
Chipset and performance
The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is an actual powerhouse in terms of processing ability – that comes as no surprise as the handset comes paired with a Snapdragon 855 chipset inside the hood while offering 6GB or 8GB RAM based on different variants. That cutting-edge chipset has made the phone become a snappy device, at least as compared to products in the same price bracket.
Under benchmark tests, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom showed a multi-core score of 10,823. The long and short of it is that the performance of Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is not a far cry from premium handsets like Samsung Galaxy S10 or iPhone XS, which also produce such a high score. That’s the exact answer to why the gaming experience and camera processing become that fast.
Battery
The battery of Oppo Reno 10x Zoom can last for one day under medium-to-heavy usage, and it’s fairly unsurprising. If users use the phone a little less, it can live up to a day and a half. That’s all you could expect from every modern smartphone, even premium flagships.
The battery is designed to pack 4,065mAh. In fact, some users would expect it to last for a longer period, but the large AMOLED screen can be a waste of power as it causes a drain on the battery and so does the “shark-fin” camera mechanism. However, battery life is still a selling point for the large-display Oppo Reno 10x Zoom.
The manufacture support VOOC Flash Charge, so you can power up the device with 20W fast charging.
Camera
The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom sports a triple-camera setup on the rear, which comprises of a 48MP primary lens (f/1.7), an 8MP ultrawide camera sensor, and a 13MP zoom sensor that has a periscope lens.
The device, in fact, gets named after its camera zoom function. You might have thought that it could perform 10x optical zoom, or 10x is the furthest distance the camera can peer, but all is wrong.
Technically speaking, the camera is only able to support 5x optical zoom with the aid of the periscope lens, but Oppo Reno 10x Zoom does come preinstalled with a whopping 60x digital zoom, even surpassing the premium-segment Huawei P30 Pro that offers 50x zoom. At present, it’s considered as the highest level of zoom a smartphone can achieve despite that you shouldn’t expect high-quality output when it zooms that far.
The “10x Zoom” term actually mentions “Hybrid zoom” – a combination of both optical and digital zoom abilities. This widely causes a dilemma among users since most of them aren’t well aware of this new technology, so you might find it a little bit deceptive when thinking about the name.
The main camera works properly in most conditions, both inside and outside. It produces alluring and bright images with plenty of light, even when it’s tasked with taking low-light shots. In such cases, subjects still look appropriately bright and great.
Depth effects are quite effective in close-up images while it creates the perfect amount of background blur for good-looking photo shots. The same for wider portraits, but a bit less impressive.
Like most camera phones these days, the handset is equipped with a scene optimizer tool to quickly identify the scene without paying too much time and effort. Apparently, this appears to be imperfect to the limit of the color range.
