With the Pixel 3a being a cheaper version of Pixel 3, many users concern about how durable the phone can be, especially when Google uses DragonTrail glass rather than Gorilla Glass. Here is the answer
JerryRigEverything did a bunch of tests on the Pixel 3a to measure its durability level. The first thing most people care about is the performance of DragonTrail. There are not many phone makers use this kind of glass on smartphones, so we had no idea how good Pixel 3a is in resisting scratches before it was officially launched.
From the video, we can see that DragonTrail glass is no less competent than the regular Corning Gorilla Glass. JerryRigEverything proved that the display also shows scratches after withstanding damages of level 6. Grooves only appear at level 7; the same thing is true for Gorilla Glass. Pixel 3a might be less durable in a drop than other smartphones, but we do not have any proof for or against that. However, this test shows that an average user may expect the phone’s screen to be intact against regular wear and tear as well as phones using Gorilla Glass.
Apart from the screen, the plastic body of the phone has to go through a bending test too. Most devices with metal-frame just break if you impose enough force on them. On the other hand, the Pixel 3a does bend a bit without snapping, thanks to the polycarbonate body. The phone will go back to its original shape without any serious damage. The reviewer does the bending several times, and the results are the same.
Another takeaway from the test is that the plastic body scratches easily. The speaker grill is protected by a metal mesh, which can be taken out. The color of the plastic cover will not be changed if it is scratched.
