From 2012 to 2016, hackers attacked Yahoo several times and stole users’ personal information. In 2013, hackers attacked and accessed more than 3 billion Yahoo accounts and stole private emails, passwords, names, phone numbers, email addresses and even answers to secret questions.
Yahoo did acknowledge the seriousness of these attacks as it has proposed compensation of $117.5 million. According to Yahoo, any user who used its email service from 2012 to 2016 and is a resident of the United States or Israel can file a request for compensation.
Accordingly, the company will provide the victims with two years of credit monitoring service from AllClearID. This service helps monitor and prevent identity theft for credit scams and offers insurance of up to $1 million. Or users can also choose to receive around $348 if they already used this kind of service.
Yahoo will also compensate up to $25,000 if users are damaged by identity theft. The company will also return 25% of the money that a user has paid for the registration of a premium Yahoo account. A user who registered for a Yahoo Small Business Uber email service can also receive a refund of up to 25% of the money a user has paid.
The deadline for users to send their request for compensation is July 20, 2020. However, Yahoo did not disclose if this compensating program is applied to other countries besides the United States and Israel or not.
