Starting January 1, 2021, WhatsApp will stop working on millions of phones across the globe. In some cases, users can update the device’s software to keep the app, in others, the app will be rendered useless altogether.

Recently, WhatsApp drops support for a huge number of older devices. From December 31, 2020, users of iOS 9 and older won’t be able to run WhatsApp, in other words, this includes iPhone 4 and earlier iPhones. Those who use iPhone 4S and its successors can update to iOS 9 to keep the messaging app.

For Android, the minimum requirement is Android 4.0.3. If your device is too old and has no support for the software, make sure that all of your chats are backed up somewhere before January 1 comes.

Here is how to do so. First, launch the chat you would like to keep and choose Group Info. Now tap on Export Chat to open the option to save the chat with or without the accompanying media. If you wish to use WhatsApp in the future, you have no other choice but to update to a newer phone.

Ever since its launch in 2009, WhatsApp has risen to be the world’s most popular app. Back in 2014, Facebook acquired the app for $19 billion. Now it is merging the app with Facebook Messenger and Instagram to offer a seamless chatting experience across the three platforms for users.
