TikTok is looking to change its user profiles to something looking remarkably like that of Instagram. ByDances is still testing the alteration and the new profile will have the avatar and follow count to the left-hand side, putting a heavier emphasis on user bios. This change was first found out by Taylor Lorenz, a reporter of the New York Times.
This test is confirmed by a spokesperson of TikTok who said that the company always looked for new ways to enhance user experience. The profile’s new design is to allow users more freedom to engage and personalize with their profiles.
TikTok’s familiar UI is borrowed from that of Instagram. However, these companies are no stranger to taking something from their competitors and making it their own. The popular Instagram Stories was a copycat of Snapchat. So Instagram may have nothing to say when someone else steals from it.
TikTok is growing fast. By November 2019, it has accumulated 1.5 billion downloads, occupying the third place on the list of the most-downloaded apps in the world, excluding games. Instagram and Facebook took the fifth and fourth place respectively.
Since Facebook owns Instagram, TikTok is now its direct competitor and the company has already had its own plan to take on the Chinese-own app. Facebook is testing Reels, a video editing app in Brazil, which is a copy of TikTok.
If Facebook decides to roll out its TikTok-like app Reels and ByDances goes with the change it is testing, we might soon feel that most of the popular social media apps feel just the same, because they recycle each other’s ideas a lot.
