Sony's PlayStation 4 Has Reached 100 Million Devices Sold

Sony has sold 100 million PS 4 console. That makes the PlayStation 4 the fastest-selling console to reach that number

Despite slow sales recently, Sony has sold 100 million Playstation 4 consoles. That makes the PlayStation 4 the fastest-selling console ever to reach that number. Just last quarter, they announced that the company had sold 96.8 million devices since the launch of the console.

From the 31st of March to 30th of June this year, Sony said that they had sold around 3.2 million units. Combine those numbers together; we have the total number of 100 million devices sold.

Reaching 100 Million

The figures mean that Sony reached this mark with the PS4 after 5 years 7 months after its official release. Moreover, that is 2 months faster than the Wii of Nintendo.

The company also said that this is the first time people purchase more games digitally than physical copies. That trend has been going on for a while already.

Despite being 5 years old already, the sale figure of PS4 has never been slowing down until recently. Last year they sold 17.8 million devices, down 1.2 million compared to the figure for  2017. However, the sale number dives noticeably in the last quarter. Sony has also issued a warning saying that they expect sales in 2019 will decrease more than in their original forecast from last quarter.

It is to be expected that PS4 sales will slowly demise because Sony will launch their next-gen console PlayStation 5 next fall. This new console will feature SSD storage, 8K support, and backward-compatibility with PS4.

Other News

In other news from Sony, their revenue from smartphone sales has dropped 15% over the last quarter. This is a continuation of a very lasting trend. In that period, Sony only sold 900,000 smartphones. That is less than half of the smartphones it sold in the same quarter last year. To explain the grim picture to you, total smartphones sold in last year is less than 50% of 2017, and until now, 2019 sales are half of the sales in 2018.

On the other hand, the imaging division of Sony continues to thrive, especially in the area of camera sensors for smartphones. Digital cameras sales were slightly down, mainly because of better smartphone cameras. But that is a trend affecting the whole industry.
