On Thursday, OnePlus, a China-based smartphone maker, had a record sale with its latest offer as the phones flew off the shelves in India. This is amid the growing resentment of Indians toward Chinese products following the COVID-19 outbreak and the ongoing border conflict between India and China.
In two days straight, #BoycottChineseProducts is one of the most trending hashtags on Twitter India after the country announced at least 20 of its soldiers lost their lives in the latest border conflict with China.
Minutes after going on sale, OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus’s latest flagship smartphone, wasn’t available on Amazon any more.
This proves that for India, staying away from the budget-friendly yet feature-rich smartphones made by Chinese companies is easier said than done.
For now, India is still relying on China for several imports. In a year ended March, the country’s purchases stood at a whopping $60 billion. China’s trade surplus with New Delhi is around $50 billion.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India would reduce the reliance on Chinese goods and Ramdas Athawale, one of Modi’s ministerial panel members, called for a stricter ban, including restaurants serving Chinese cuisine.
